What are curved monitors?
The actual goal of the entire Curved technology is the subjective enlargement of the image for the viewer, which arises due to the curved display. If you have taken a central sitting position in front of the display so the entire surface of the monitor (whether in the middle or at the edges) equidistant away from the eyes resulting in less distortion and the image looks larger. In addition, the subjective impression of image depth improves (similar to 3D – only without annoying glasses). The only effect occurs if you are sitting in the middle of the Curved Monitor – if you look at the side of the picture it will be more distorted (more so than with Flat Monitors). However, with PC monitors, you are actually 90% alone in front of the device and rarely look diagonally or laterally on the picture – so this disadvantage is not definitely an argument against buying a Curved Monitor.
Thus, the main difference all over other monitors is just the curved image surface. All other questions are the same as when buying a normal monitor. The equipment is the same. Therefore, it is important: Inform yourself exactly about the respective devices – preferably before you purchase them with the help of checks.
Which connection do you need?
There are various connection options: HDMI, DVI, display port and VGA and then, also different versions – what do you need now? The oldest but best-known connection technology is VGA which transmits the signals between the monitor and the PC or the graphics card analogously – these must then be digitized. Actually, the VGA connection is extinct. The next advancement was the DVI connection which transmits signals directly in digital form – thus, the eliminating conversion process and the image quality increase massively. However, this is no longer able to deal with certain modern resolutions such as Full HD – this requires the current standard HDMI.
HDMI is an abbreviation and actually stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. The biggest innovation is probably the higher data transfer rates, which enable high resolutions like Full HD. In addition, video and audio signals are transmitted simultaneously – an absolute novelty. This is also the main reason why the technology has prevailed almost over. All modern entertainment devices such as Blu-Ray players, game consoles, laptops and so on put on a transmission with the help of HDMI. However, there are differences here too – the most modern resolution (Ultra HD) can no longer transfer HDMI 1.4 – this requires the development of HDMI 2.0. Another possibility to connect the new Curved Monitor is the Display Port introduced in 2006. Using Display Port 1.2, signals can be transferred lossless to the new monitor with 4K resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate.
Which resolution should you choose?
The new curved monitors are available in many resolution variants: Full HD, WHD, UWHD, UWQHD or Ultra HD (4K). If you do not need the latest technology and do not have a particularly fast graphic card, you can safely turn to a Full HD Curved Monitor. Nevertheless, what is the 4K resolution of everyone talking about? First: The terms are structured as follows:
The generic term for the Full HD successor is Ultra High Definition short Ultra HD or UHD. The following are two basic groups that stand for the respective development step of the resolution – 4K and 8K. Each of these describes different resolutions – 4K roughly stands for 4000 × 2000 pixels and 8K stands for 8000 × 4000 pixels. However, these are not common – that why the industry has used other resolutions. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has specified that monitors must have at least a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels with the 4K drawing. This thing has also established itself as the common “consumer resolution”. This resolution has four times as many pixels as the classic Full HD resolution with a doubling of the number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical surface.
On the other hand, which should it be? An important decision is that the aspect ratio used. Former 4: 3 formats were common – but they were almost replaced by “wide formats” like 16: 9 or 16:10 completely now. The absolute novelty for Curved Monitors is the 21:9 format – this ultra wide format is also used in the cinema – so you can enjoy, for example, movies without annoying black edges. The later resolution depends mostly on the aspect ratio used. Nevertheless, for example, a 16: 9 curved monitor can support a resolution of 1920 × 1080 or just 3840 × 2160 pixels. It is important that the graphic card has the right performance and you operate the monitor in its native resolution.
An important question: What do Curved Monitors cost?
At the end of 2014, the first Curved Displays were launched on the German market. However, these were still extremely expensive at this time. The common prices were up to well over 1,500 €.
However, a lot has happened since then – prices are falling and the curved screens are now affordable for the average consumer. There are full HD resolution beginner models up to 400 € and mid-range models up to 1000 € – even with a higher resolution. Many Curved Monitor models are compared with true Ultra HD resolution that a price of 1,500 Euro or more have surfaced. The price depends mainly on the panel used and the inch size. The prices between a 21-inch or 32-inch model vary greatly – so you should think twice about whether you really need a 32-inch Curved screen. Contrast and sharpness – What are matters?
The contrast actually has a simple definition – it relates about the relationship between two colors – more precisely between white and black. If a display can render a 4000 white dot times brighter than a black dot, it has a contrast ratio of 4,000: 1 (pronounced 4000 to 1). This value is also referred to as static contrast – this thing is rarely specified by the manufacturers. In contrast, the dynamic contrast is often higher hence is preferred by marketing. In dynamic contrast, the display of the new Curved Monitor regulates the brightness of the display – for example, one part of the image becomes darker and another one brighter, which increases the contrast. This is realized with the help of the backlight.
The sharpness is often a subjective perceived criterion. Certain image evaluation criteria such as hue, intense color and brightness are perceived obvious by the viewer. The sharpness can be adjusted through the main screen interface of users. With these test images, the sharpness can be optimally adjusted without subjective perceptual distortions.
How bright does a Curved Monitor have to be?
Firstly, the brightness of an object whether a light bulb or a display is given in candela. One candela corresponds to the brightness of a candle. For displays, this unit is combined with square meters – thus, creating the cd / m² ratio. Modern monitors have a brightness of at least 300 cd / m² – high-end devices can even create 400 or more.
How big should it be?
What inch size the new Curved Monitor should have depends mainly on the intended use. One trend is very clear: the size in inches is increasing. Ten years ago, 15 inch devices were the “non-plus-ultra” – but nowadays, you cannot inspire them anymore. At that time, you often put several monitors next to each other to have a larger desktop. However, with the invention and spread of the 16: 9 wide aspect ratio, these systems have had their day. Currently the most common models are 21 or 24 inches. This is completely sufficient for almost all types of consumers. They offer enough space on the desktop and even the possibility to look at several windows side by side. Which reaction time is appropriate?
The manufacturer’s specification for the reaction rate is GTG or black to black. This is stated in ms – pronounced milliseconds. The manufacturer’s description describes how fast the screen can switch between two black levels. This manufacturer’s information is often treated with caution, as these often do not correspond to reality – so it is important to rely on Curved Monitor Checks. The provided information by the manufacturers is only indicative. Especially, the important is the reaction time for players. If it is too low then it comes to unsightly effects on the image like streaks or Verschwimmungen. In addition, the effect can appear when watching fast movies. In general, the lower the better – but it depends particularly on the panel of the display.
Panel? TN or IPS?
The cheapest and most widespread panel technology is TN technology. The main features: low production costs and fast reaction times but it has some problems with a good color rendering. These are particularly well suited for multimedia and office applications but also for playing. Most displays use this technology.
In contrast, IPS Curved Monitors work with liquid crystal layers, which are not juxtaposed but it superimposed as in the TN models. As a result, they achieve high viewing angle stability, good contrast values and a particularly realistic color rendering. These are particularly well suited for graphic designers and professional users – gamers should think twice about whether to buy an IPS model, since the response time is often above the TN displays and it comes to unsightly effects in fast movements.
Viewing angle on curved display
The viewing angle is the angle at which you look at the surface of the display. H for horizontal viewing angle and V for vertical viewing angles are stated by the manufacturers. The higher the value, the better it is – because you can look even more “oblique” on the screen without losing color fastness and contrast. Typical values are between 170 ° and 200 °. With Curved Monitors, there is the special case that hardly any problems with the viewing angle, especially when viewed in the middle, because the curved design of each pixel of the monitor is equidistant from the eye – thus, the image is perceived optimally. However, the problems are greater than with flat monitors, if you look at the side of the device. Which cables for a Curved Monitor?
Anyone buying a new Curved Monitor and relying on a model with a resolution beyond Full HD like Ultra HD (4K, 5K or 8K) should focus on using the right cable. Unfortunately, many retailers like Amazon or Notebooksbilligership the displays without matching accessories. If you want to enjoy the full Ultra HD resolution and not just with 30Hz refresh rate should put on a HDMI 2.0 port including a HDMI 2.0 cable. Alternatively, the new but also expensive Display Port cables from 1.2 are a good alternative. That’s the only way to get everything out of your new device.
LED or LCD – What is better?
Many people are faced with many difficult questions when purchasing Curved Monitors – we have summarized the most important ones on this page to make your purchase decision easier. A first common question is which technology should buy LCD or LED?
The term LCD comes from the English language and stands for Liquid Crystal Display and it is just for screens that shine with the help of liquid crystals. These control the polarization direction of the light in the crystals with the help of electrical voltage and thus produce different colors. The advantage of this LCD technology is a high luminosity and relatively low power consumption.
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode from German: LED. Due to the undercurrent set, these small diodes will light up the light. Actually, these are also LED displays but it has a different backlight. Instead of fluorescent tubes LED-Curved monitors use these light emitting diodes. This leads to a better control of the light supply. It is more dynamic and especially the dynamic contrast can be greatly improved as only parts of the display can be made lighter or darker. Thus, both technologies are different in the backlight used.
